  • What is Sage and who uses it?

    04 March 2014

Sage is a hugely popular series of software used by businesses of all sizes. An estimated 800,000 businesses in the UK use Sage, and as a result, a qualification in the software can be a powerful tool.

Sage primarily provides software for management of finances, HR and payroll, however they also offer manufacturing, stock management and retail support software. This makes Sage hugely popular amongst managerial staff from all sectors and in particular, new small business owners.

Sage cuts out the need for a costly accountant or bookkeeper - a large expense when your business is just starting up - and allows owners to do their accounts themselves, keeping track of expenses, invoices and VAT in a simple and organised manner. Simple once you know how to use it, Sage not only makes keeping track of finances easy, but also helps new (and possibly inexperienced) business owners keep their records organised.

However the variety of services which Sage offers means that it is not only small business who benefit. Sage software is also used by a number of different departments in some of the largest businesses in the UK. The simplicity and efficiency of its accounts software means that it is often utilised by those working in the finance or HR department of large companies and organisations. It is also used by those in manufacturing or customer relationship management to organise their time and resources.

Total Training Solutions offer qualifications in a range of Sage software, specifically Sage 50 Accounts, Forecasting and Payroll, Sage Instant Accounts and Sage ACT! This means that whether you’re looking to start your own business and want to learn how to manage your own finances effectively, or whether you want an extra qualification to help you advance in your sector, we have a course for you.

Sage is constantly growing and evolving, meaning it is used by single person start-ups, finance giants and everyone in between. The level of support offered by Sage, and the fact that it is a cloud-based system means that you’ll never be left behind. • How compatible are ACT! and Sage?

    14 March 2014

Sage ACT! is a slightly different Sage application, used to manage customer relations as opposed to financial data such as payroll or expenses. Used across the board, Sage is an organisational tool which helps small businesses, larger organisations, individuals and sales teams keep track of client and prospect details in one single shareable database. It integrates with Microsoft Office, email contact lists and social media in order to create one unified system, resulting in a more organised workplace.

One customer described their satisfaction with ACT! as such

"Because my head, although big, can only hold so much. Because my office staff, although lovely, can only write so many sticky notes. Because my customers, although loyal, still need to hear from me. And, because it makes my business run better…period!"

Like all Sage products, ACT! ensures a more organised workplace, providing a single place to stay connected and up-to-date with customer and prospect information, generating and tracking communication, leaving you more time to focus on your business. Sage Accounts, Payroll and Forecasting work in the same way, meaning that combining Sage applications can ensure maximum efficiency.

By using Sage to take care of your finances and customer relations, it can alleviate the need for additional workers such as accountants, and make the work of employees much easier. This is especially important for small businesses, single-person businesses or recent start-ups, for whom money is tight and cutting down on unnecessary costs is essential. Sage makes tasks easy to complete personally, rather than paying someone else to do it for you - which is not only cost efficient but also creates a personal touch to the business which is always appreciated by new customers, especially when it comes to new or independent businesses.

Total Training Solutions offer two ACT! courses - one for beginners and one for those who already use the system regularly. Our introductory course helps customers to understand, set up and make the most out of ACT!, while our advanced course is designed to maximise your knowledge. We also offer a range of other Sage courses - why not consider investing in a secondary qualification in a programme such as Sage 50 Payroll or Sage Instant Accounts for maximum organisation?

  • Sage Instant or Sage 50?

    20 March 2014

The two main Sage accounting programmes offered by Total Training Solutions, and two of the most popular Sage products worldwide, are Sage 50 Accounts and Sage Instant Accounts. If you’re planning on adding a Sage accounting qualification to your list of transferable skills, you need to know which course will be the most useful for you. So here’s a quick rundown of the differences between the two programmes to help you find the perfect qualification for your career needs…

In many ways, the two programmes are incredibly similar. Both allow for the management of money, invoicing, VAT, end of year accounts, customer relations and contracts. They also both allow you to easily share information with your accountant, as well as having a huge range of features.

The primary difference between the two programmes is who they are designed for. Sage Instant is for small businesses or sole traders, allowing developing companies to take care of their own finances without the aid of an accountant. For this reason, many new businesses also use Sage Instant while they are getting on their feet financially. No accounting experience is required, and the programme is simple to use once you know how. Our courses will teach you how to make the most of the features that Sage Instant has to offer for new and small businesses, and also how to utilise the programme in a way that complements your business.

Sage 50 on the other hand, is a programme for more established businesses. The programme has a larger range of features and has a less easy to navigate interface, as it is often used by those with more experience in business accounting. It can be used either to manage one larger organisation, or by accountants to manage multiple companies - additional user and company licenses can be added at an extra cost. One of the programmes greatest features is its ability to departmentalise. This means that a company or organisation with numerous factions can run reports for individual stores or branches, or monitor individual teams or salespeople. The ability to produce over 900 reports makes this the ideal programme for analysing performances.

Whether you are an accountant looking for a qualification in one of the UK’s most popular accounting systems, or a business owner looking to learn how to manage your own accounts, Total Training Solutions has a Sage course for you. • Why use Sage 50 Payroll?

    28 March 2014

Sage 50 Payroll is one of the most widely used payroll systems in the world, allowing you to electronically manage your entire payroll process. Like all Sage products, Sage 50 Payroll is an organisational tool, making complicated, time-consuming tasks quick and simple, leaving you more time to take care of the business. However, arguably Sage 50 Payroll’s most useful function is its connection to HMRC.

The software is recognised by HMRC and is up to date with all of the latest payroll legislation, including RTI and Automatic Enrollment. Sage 50 Payroll ensures that your payroll is submitted accurately, efficiently and in compliance with the latest HMRC rules and regulations. The software also allows for calculations of statutory payments such as tax, PAYE, National Insurance and maternity pay easily and with minimal effort, as well as being able to submit forms to HMRC through the programme.

HMRC tax calculations and form submissions are often one of the most difficult parts of running a business. The jargon can be confusing, and managing timing alongside other day-to-day tasks can be hard work - often taking up more time than is necessary. Sage Payroll removes some of this stress. Acting as a middleman, forms can be submitted directly through the programme, as well as helping you with any calculations required. And since Sage Payroll is HMRC recognised, you know you can avoid costly fines.

However, Sage Payroll doesn’t just help you manage payments - it can also help you manage your employees. Information on all of your employees can be stored in a safe location, including appraisals, disciplinaries, job and salary history and other relevant statistics. Absences, be it sick leave, maternity leave or holiday days can also be managed through the software, making keeping track of payments and leave much easier, as well as generating a personalised schedule for each employee.

While the capabilities of Sage 50 Payroll are extensive, the programme itself is simple to use once you know how. You don’t need to be a payroll expert, however it can seem a little bit daunting upon first glance. A qualification from Total Training Solutions can help. We can teach you the basics and help you to use the software to your advantage. Alternatively, if you already have a foundation-level knowledge of Sage Payroll, we have plenty of courses to help you build on this, and even make this a transferrable skill which could aid your career.
