  • Introduction to Six Sigma

    09 October 2013

Six Sigma is a popular set of strategies, methods, and tools used to improve process efficiency within a company. The strategy is designed to identify and remove causes of defects and implement a Six Sigma infrastructure.

At Total Training Solutions, we offer a Lean Six Sigma Awareness course in order to introduce Six Sigma to an organisation. This will give participants an understanding of Six Sigma theory and practice, and the basic knowledge needed to support the application of Six Sigma in the workplace. Six Sigma targets areas of the operation that are inefficient and therefore affecting the overall business performance - focusing on issues such as reducing cycle process time, reducing pollution, reducing costs or increasing customer satisfaction. Using statistical methods taught in the Total Training Solutions courses, these areas are then methodically worked through to ensure a maximum input to output ratio is achieved.

However, taking on board a Six Sigma strategy is worthless, if those implementing it are not qualified in these methods. Total Training Solutions provide a range of courses for those wishing to bring their business up to a Six Sigma standard of efficiency. From Lean Six Sigma Awareness to Six Sigma Yellow, Green and Black Belt, Total Training Solutions can ensure your team is qualified to implement the Six Sigma strategy - allowing your business to waste less time and therefore generate more profit.

To browse our full range of Six Sigma courses, take a look at our course catalogue. For more information on Six Sigma, or any other Total Training Solutions courses, contact us on 0800 612 1299 or via our website.

  • Six Sigma - Yellow and Green Belts

    18 October 2013

As mentioned in the previous post, a unique feature of Six Sigma is the “belt” infrastructure it implements. By having Six Sigma professionals at every level of the business, each with their own roles, tasks and goals, projects can be completed efficiently, as every team has at least a primary knowledge of Six Sigma strategy.

The most basic level is the Yellow Belt. Yellow Belts are team members who assist in completing projects though not at a Green Belt or Black Belt level. Through teaching workers at this level - staff members, administrators, operations personnel, team members etc. - the Sigma Six strategy, it ensures all members of the team are working towards the same goal. There is little point in managers and executives aiming for company improvement, if the actual workers are unaware what goals they should be working towards. Total Training Solutions offer a Yellow Belt qualification for organisations who wish to educate their workers in Sigma Six strategy. The course covers Sigma Six basics, as well as elaborating on how the strategy can improve the workplace. Yellow Belts will be expected to think in a data-driven, cause-and-effect, manner and apply this to their work, all of which is taught through the cost-effective two day course.

Green Belts are one tier above, and these are the workers who traditionally implement projects and act as process leaders. Once qualified, professional staff, operational specialists, managers and executives are often the people who achieve Green Belt status. Through courses such as Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Manager by Total Training Solutions, these members of the team can learn how to support Black Belt workers and work on projects of their own. Green Belts are often expected to suggest new Sigma Six project ideas, lead process improvement projects and disseminate new tools and strategies, all of which can contribute to saving your business money.

Though lower down in the Sigma Six hierarchy of roles, these “belts” are essential to ensuring Sigma Six strategies and projects are implemented correctly in the workplace. If you’re thinking of improving the efficiency of your business and want to ensure all members of your team are knowledgeable in how to work towards the right goals at their level, contact Total Training Solutions for more information on 0800 612 1299 or via our website. Alternatively, visit our course catalogue to view our entire range of courses.

  • Six Sigma Black Belt

    28 October 2013

The next tier above Green Belt in the Six Sigma “belt” infrastructure is the Black Belt. The Black Belt team members lead the efficiency projects and are also qualified to train and coach teams in the Six Sigma strategy.

A qualification to certify you as an official Black Belt under the Six Sigma system is not only advantageous but in fact essential for many managerial positions across the globe. It demonstrates a professional knowledge of the Six Sigma strategy, company efficiency and team management. Black Belts are often expected to prepare project charters, lead teams, coordinate logistics and provide Sigma Six training, coaching and guidance, as well as demonstrating top level managerial capability. A qualification such as Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from Total Training Solutions indicates this level of ability - teaching higher members of staff how to implement the Sigma Six strategy and build on their pre-existing skills to a gold standard. Recognised the world over, the course is run over a period that suits your business, and is a quick and simple way of improving the efficiency of your business.

Alongside this course is the Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt course. The Master Black Belt takes on further leadership responsibilities within the Six Sigma programme, as an advisor to executive or business unit managers. The course develops experienced Black Belts’ skills and teaches them how to successfully and effectively manage and lead at a higher level. For Black Belts who wish to take on more responsibility and work their way higher up the Six Sigma ladder, this course is a time and cost efficient way to build on their previous experience within the “belt” structure and take on new challenges.

These roles are at the highest level within the Six Sigma project infrastructure. By having qualified Black Belts and Master Black Belts, a Six Sigma structured company can improve their efficiency and, subsequently, their outgoing costs through smart management, leadership and training. As a manager, a Black Belt or Master Black Belt qualification sets you apart from those without - demonstrating top notch managerial skills and an ability to integrate into and lead in a Six Sigma organisation.

If you want to improve the efficiency of your business and believe your managerial staff could benefit from Six Sigma training, or indeed if you want to enhance your own prospects, contact Total Training Solutions for more information on 0800 612 1299 or via our website. Alternatively, visit our course directory to view our entire range of courses.

  • Six Sigma Champions and Executives

    01 November 2013

Every professional project needs organisational support. While Six Sigma Belts work on the project at hand at different levels, Champions and Executives have a more behind-the-scenes, managerial role. Working with the Black Belt (project leaders) Champions and Executives set the direction for new projects and work together to begin to put them into place. They may be required to develop project objectives, select team leaders, provide communication between team members and top management, help to manage budget, and assure that teams are on target and that Six Sigma strategy is being implemented correctly and efficiently.

Training at this level from Total Training Solutions takes only two days and is a cost efficient way of training members of staff in Six Sigma strategy to improve the efficiency of your business. Champions play a critical role in establishing strategy and maintaining it over the course of the project. Statistics show that it is when Six Sigma is implemented at a managerial level that organisations see the greatest outcome. Staff members implementing the structure at a higher level and ensuring that everyone is doing the job they are required to do prevents miscommunication and ensures a clear cut strategy for everyone to follow. It also aids communication between different “belts” and increases productivity.

By investing in Six Sigma training from Total Training Solutions at all levels - Green and Yellow Belt, Black Belt and Champions and Executives - you are investing in your business. Highly profitable companies such as Amazon, Microsoft and American Express all use the Six Sigma strategy to aid the efficiency of their business, prevent defects, ensure a faster turn around time and generate more profit. Six Sigma is one of the most revered organisation strategies in the world, and has tried and tested benefits. Training through Total Training Solutions means your organisation will be knowledgeable in the strategy in a matter of weeks, and in no time at all you could be decreasing your defects and cycle times and increasing your profits.

If you’re interested in implementing Six Sigma in your business, or alternatively, if you simply want to improve your career prospects by showing future employers your ability to fit into a Six Sigma organisation, contact Total Training Solutions today. We have a range of Six Sigma courses for personal or professional improvement, which you can find in our course catalogue. • Fire Health and Safety

    25 November 2013

It is the duty of all managerial and supervisory staff to ensure an organisation is covered in the event of a fire. This involves knowing correct protocol, making sure staff members are aware of how to react in the event of a fire, and being able to carry out risk assessments and spotting potential hazards or where protective measures may be required.

Fire is one danger which all organisations, businesses and companies need to be prepared for, which is why Total Training Solution offer the NEBOSH Fire Certificate. The qualification is delivered by Phoenix Health and Safety, an accredited NEBOSH provider, so you know that you, your colleagues or your employees are getting the most professional certification possible.

By preparing your staff to react correctly in the event of a fire, your company or organisation will avoid many personal injuries and material damages. However in addition to these obvious benefits, investing in this specific fire safety qualification for you or your workers may also result in reduced economic outgoings. Fewer days lost from staff on sick leave, fewer payouts and fewer expenses for repairing the damage caused by fire at your place of work will aid your organisation economically, potentially saving you money in the long-term.

The NEBOSH Fire Certificate from Total Training Solutions is also a potential benefit for people wishing to move higher up the career ladder. Managers and supervisors now spend a lot of time on health and safety, and having a prior knowledge of this can give you the upper hand. • Who benefits from health and safety training?

    02 December 2013

As previously discussed, health and safety is an increasingly important factor for every kind of business. From the more obvious such as construction workers, electricians or chefs to the less obvious shops and offices, every organisation must now take into account health and safety protocol. This results in less accidents, less compensation claims, and can even save the company money. But who can benefit from a certificate such as NEBOSH and why is it worth the investment?

People in authority roles within an organisation such as managers, supervisors and directors can always use health and safety training. By having a more rounded knowledge of potential accidents and how to prevent them, a NEBOSH certificate could make your job easier. Reducing accidents from your team and improving efficiency will not only make the organisation run much smoother but also act as a reflection on you as an authority figure. Fewer outgoing costs due to fewer accidents results in a higher profit, which is always noticed by superiors.

Manual workers also benefit from this training. Increased awareness of how to do a job as safely as possible can increase productivity and decrease the potential for an accident, which could potentially put you out of work for several weeks or months. A health and safety qualification from NEBOSH is also a great addition to any CV. Potential employers will know that not only are you aware of how to act in a responsible and safe manner in the workplace, but also be confident that you are not at risk of becoming involved in an accident due to negligence.

However, the people who attain the certificate are not the only people to benefit. Customers or clients will also profit from a more health and safety conscious work place. Shop customers will be less likely to be hurt due to mistakes made by members of staff, and clients of electricians, construction workers, decorators, plumbers etc. will have peace of mind that the person working on their property is sufficiently qualified and unlikely to hurt themselves or anybody else on site.

Total Training Solutions offer a number of NEBOSH health and safety certificates, delivered by accredited NEBOSH training providers, so you know you’re getting the best quality professional training. If you want to learn more about the NEBOSH courses we provide, you can find them here. Alternatively, feel free to browse our course directory for information about other available qualifications. • How PRINCE2 compares to other project management courses in the industry

    07 February 2014

There are many Project Management courses available on the market, but which one is right for you?

PRINCE2 is the leading project management training resource. It focuses on improving project management skills by providing you with a practical methodology to follow. There is a clear process model and templates to the PRINCE2 structure. Some people think of it as a manual with a set of instructions that show you how to organise and run a project.

Primarily focused on IT operations, PRINCE2 is extremely prescriptive and must be carefully followed for the best results. The system is favoured in government organisations, but has expanded and is now in used in non-government work.

An alternative project management program is PMP. This is a more theoretical approach to project management and offers techniques and ways to evaluate or complete a project. Differing from PRINCE2, it is suggested that PMP is more of a guide to project management, and how you use or interpret it is up to the individual organisation.

PMP is closely associated with construction and government or military operations. It provides a standard of which to follow, specifically in IT projects.

What is beneficial about the PMP system is its flexibility. As it can be adapted to each project, other methodologies, like PRINCE2 and Agiles, fit into it. PMP is comprehensive and can be applied to any project, in its whole or in part.

What sets PRINCE2 and PMP apart is the role of the project manager. In PRINCE2 the PM is the ‘middleman’ between the ‘workers’ and the ‘board’. Decisions from either side are passed on via the PM. PMP has the opposite approach. Here, the PM keeps the whole operation moving forward to completion. If something goes wrong or there is a problem, with budgets or schedule for example, the PM is to blame.

There are other project management methods, such as Agile. This is often used to manage new product or service development projects or design and build activities for the engineering and IT industries. The Agile system focuses on flexibility and interaction from team members and suppliers to constantly improve a project’s development. The model doesn’t have a project manager, instead responsibility is divided between three roles.

To learn more about the Agile, PMP or PRINCE2 project management frameworks, contact Total Training Solutions. We are specialist training providers who can help steer you personal or company development through the knowledge, understanding and certification of industry standard qualifications. For the individual, adding an approved project management qualification to your portfolio will improve your employment prospects. An organisation which invests in project management training for its employees will save, time and money in the long-run through efficient project planning, execution and completion.

  • Earning potential with a PRINCE2 qualification

    14 February 2014

PRINCE2 is the leading project management resource on the market and is recognised globally. As a result, a qualification in PRINCE2 can have multiple financial benefits both for individuals and organisations.

Individuals with PRINCE2 qualifications are highly sought after in today’s job market. Rarely are project management job opportunities advertised without a preferred qualification in PRINCE2. Due to the fact that the methodology is so widely used within the government sector, it is highly regarded and widely known, and even a basic knowledge or fundamental qualification can secure an interview. The qualification shows your potential employer that you have up-to-date project management skills, which will therefore save them money training you and also give them peace of mind that you will carry out an efficient project.

A PRINCE2 qualification from Total Training Solutions is the ideal choice for everyone in the project management sector. Whether you’re a recent project management graduate, or you have worked in the sector for years, a PRINCE2 qualification can be of benefit to you. Due to the fact that PRINCE2 knowledge is now often required by potential employers, and sometimes even preferred over experience, a qualification can bring older, more experienced project managers up to speed. It can show your potential employer that as well as being experienced in the sector, you are also knowledgeable in more contemporary practices and are not stuck using tired and outdated methods. On the other hand, for recent graduates, a PRINCE2 qualification can be the ideal move from academic study, to practical knowledge. It shows employers that you don’t just know the theory, you’re also adept in how to utilise it on real projects.

PRINCE2 can also benefit entire companies and organisations. For smaller, independent companies, a recognised qualification can provide credibility and demonstrate a controlled and organised structure, ensuring good communication and staff competence at all levels. It promises an ability to manage risks effectively and a focus on the aims of the project.

Whether it is a fundamental qualification, or something more advanced, a PRINCE2 qualification is essential for anyone in the project management sector. The cost of the course is a solid investment due to the potential to advance you in your career. With more and more employers opting for a candidate who looks good on paper, with relevant training and qualifications rather than experience, PRINCE2 has become a yardstick against which to measure candidates - a knowledge which is globally recognised and understood.

To learn more about the PRINCE2 courses and qualifications available from Total Training Solutions, contact us today. You can call us on 0800 612 1299 or message us through our website. You can view the full range of PRINCE2 courses, or browse everything Total Training Solutions has to offer on our website.

  • The power of PRINCE2

    20 February 2014

The best way to demonstrate the benefits of implementing the PRINCE2 methodology is to look at the many testimonials of satisfied PRINCE2 customers. PRINCE2 is the leading project management resource on the market, and has therefore been used by everyone from Disney to the NHS, however is most regularly utilised by government bodies.

PRINCE2 increases efficiency of government operations around the world, as we can see from these two testimonials - one by Suffolk County Council, and the other the Australian Department of Parliamentary Services (or DPS).

    In 2007, Suffolk County Council started a major transformation programme to tackle significant budget challenges. One of the main targets for the central Programme and Project Management team was to help the organisation better manage significant change by embedding a more effective project management system across the organisation, for which they used PRINCE2. Suffolk County Council said;

“We knew PRINCE2 would provide the fundamental tools and techniques, but were aware that in the past it has been regarded as significantly theoretical and bureaucratic. We needed to tailor PRINCE2 in a way that people running projects would find it easier to use and apply. We had to recognise that not everyone running projects had experience in managing projects, and even fewer had PRINCE2 qualifications.”

By using PRINCE2 training courses, like those offered by Total Training Solutions, and adapting PRINCE2 methodology to suit their needs, Suffolk County Council have been able to improve their efficiency and enhance overall project board performance.

Despite Suffolk’s hesitations with this earlier version of the methodology and need to alter certain elements (creating their own PRINCESS system - PRINCE ‘Suffolk Style’), the council still use it for programme and project management and have been more and more impressed as PRINCE2 continues to upgrade and improve...

“It seems to be more flexible and less prescriptive than the old version. This means it will be more representative of how projects actually run in the real world. It provides much better insight into how the methodology sits alongside other methodologies and corporate systems. This will be a significant benefit in helping to embed best practice across an organisation.”

    Across the world, in the same year, the Australian DPS was also introducing PRINCE2 in order to increase department efficiency. Due to the extensive services provided by and responsibilities of the department, the Product and Service Development Branch made the decision to implement a single project management methodology for a more unified approach. After implementing PRINCE2, the DPS said;

“What has followed has been a remarkable change in how projects are delivered, including an increased awareness by staff of their roles and responsibilities in the project management life-cycle. All project management staff have received PRINCE2 training. This has established common language and expectations. Career prospects for staff are enhanced through their shared qualifications. Better projects ensure quality outcomes for clients and ultimately increased value for money for all Australians.”

PRINCE2 is utilised by so many government bodies due to its investment value - what is invested in training is made up for in money saved (and even made) by improved efficiency and project results. If you want to learn more about the PRINCE2 courses offered by Total Training Solutions, take a look at our full range of courses, or call us on 0800 612 1299. • Is it best to focus on price when shopping for a PRINCE2 course?

    28 February 2014

When shopping around for a PRINCE2 course, there are three factors which should be considered: price, accessibility and course type.

A PRINCE2 course is an investment. PRINCE2 is a highly sought after qualification which can further careers, allowing you to make your money back by working up the career ladder. However, for many a less expensive course would be preferable. Total Training Solutions’ PRINCE2 courses are affordable at a middle-of-the-road cost. A PRINCE2 qualification can help you exponentially in succeeding in this sector, meaning the course will soon pay for itself.

The Foundation course is a perfect first step for those who are interested in a project management career. • IS UNIVERSITY THE ONLY CHOICE?

    18 August 2016

It’s August and along with the warmer weather comes the A & AS level results for many thousands of England, Wales and Northern Ireland teenagers. This year, although pass rates are up, the number of A* and A grades have fallen slightly again. The traditional next choice for many is University and a degree, but getting a degree is not the only route into many careers and with the increase in some University fees to above the previous cap of £9,000 to £9,250 per annum it is not always the most cost effective for some.

Although this year there are more University places available than ever, many top employers are opening up their recruitment to those leaving school with A-Levels. For someone looking to a career in Computer Science, for example, a 3 year degree course will only start you on the professional road. Employees in this field are looking for further vocational qualifications which can be easily gained by someone with A Levels alone. A report by Barclays and the Centre for Economics and Business Research has shown that those entering apprenticeships after leaving school have much higher lifetime earnings than those going into a graduate career.

If you need to think seriously about an alternative to University then take a look at some of the industry accredited training courses here. You can find out more about our complete range via our website. Please call us on 01423 790107 or email info@tts-uk.com to book your place or if you have any questions about any of our courses.
